President's Message
March 2003
The SCVHS Board of Directors would like to extend its deep and sincere appreciation to Patti Rasmussen, who retired from the board at the end of her most recent term. A longtime board member, Patti had served as chair of our Educational Outreach Committee, and coordinated tours of Heritage Junction for approximately 3,000 children each school year.
We'll miss this important service she provided and yes, we're looking for a new volunteer to step up and lead our school tours! If you can help out, please call us at 254-1275 or send e-mail to info@scvhistory.com.
Patti may have decided to go off the board for awhile but she's not gone thanks to a grant she secured from the City of Santa Clarita, Patti is working with local educators to develop a program for local school children to take self-guided tours of historical sites throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.
At our January board meeting we welcomed our newest board member, Duane Harte, a past president (and current member) of the Friends of Mentryville board and a former city parks commissioner. As the newcomer, Duane was elected corresponding secretary!
Other officers elected in January for the 2003 term are: Leon Worden, President; Alan Bofenkamp, 1st Vice President; Mary Ann Colf, 2nd Vice President; Glen Rollins, Treasurer; and Pat Saletore, Recording Secretary.
Pat Saletore, incidentally, is working with some new, bang-up database software that will dramatically improve our abilitiy to track membership, generate mailing lists and log monetary and physical donations to the Society.
Leon Worden, President

Genealogy Group News
March 2003
The Genealogy group held its meeting on February 6, 2003 with our guest speaker, Bonnie Petrovich, showing us the latest filing method designed to keep your documented family files in quick, easy to find order. This method has been the latest filing method endorsed by the Salt Lake Family History Center in Salt Lake, Utah, which uses a color code. Several family tree computer programs have programmed the same color codes combinations right into their programs, so that you will be using the same color combination on the computer as well as those used in your filing cabinet. We were shown how a portable mini filing cabinet can be used to take your color-coded files right from your regular filing cabinet and placed in the mini filing cabinet and taken to the library and the Family History Center having the information easily accessible to use and once you are home again, place the files back in your regular filing cabinet.
Bonnie Petrovich is one of the directors at the local Valencia Mormon Church Family History Center. She teaches classes on how to do family research at the Valencia Stake as well as the Santa Monica Family History Center.
At our March 6th meeting at the Saugus Train Station at 7 p.m., Bonnie will show a video and demo how to use the Mormon Church's Family History Catalog. Everyone is welcome to attend our meeting.
