Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society

Quarterly at the Saugus Train Station

COMING FEB. 20, 2004:
JOHN WAYNE stars in "Lawless Range" (Lone Star, 1935)

Shot entirely at Melody Ranch in Newhall, and Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce

Back by popular demand, the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society is proud to announce a FULL SEASON of "Friday Night Flickers," that fabulous event created for the Santa Clarita Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival that packed the freight room at the Saugus Station and was the talk of the town the morning after.
Now, the Flickers will be a quarterly presentation and fund-raiser for the Society, with the next performance to be held Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, with future showings scheduled for May 21 and Aug. 20, 2004. The Society has unearthed some never-before-seen (at Heritage Junction) movies that were filmed in the area that you won't want to miss!
The Feb. 20 film, "Lawless Range," features John Wayne long before he became "Duke." In this 1935 Lone Star talkie, you'll see and hear Wayne lip-synch on horseback through Vasquez Rocks — and later as he serenades his blonde leading lady at Melody Ranch in Newhall. (The entire film was shot at Melody Ranch and Vasquez Rocks.)
Each movie is accompanied by a delicious catered dinner, including dessert, soft drinks and coffee. We're even looking for some pre-show newsreels and cartoons to make for lively evenings.
The best news? Society members get special pricing for these films: $25 per person general admission ($15 for each child under 12). Non-members pay $30 per person ($20 for each child under 12). Sound good? But wait! There's more!
Members can buy the Friday Night Flickers Series all at once for $100 ($60 for kids) or $120 ($80 for kids) for non-members. The package entitles you to four wonderful nights of old-fashioned entertainment PLUS your choice of a local history video or one of the two SCV history books produced by the students at Sierra Vista Junior High School.
Act now, as seating is limited. This is sure to be the hottest ticket in town, so make your reservations today! Drop a line by e-mail to (preferred) or call (661) 254-1275 and leave your name and number; one of our volunteers will get back to you. See you at the Flickers!
